Polar bears, kodiak bears, Alaska peninsula brown bears, Kamchatka brown bears, Ussuri brown bears, Yellowstone grizzly bears, all these bears are on average much larger than African lions so it would really be a mismatch. I think most black bears would lose to an African lion even with a weight advantage.
So i think the most even match up for the African lion is the Barren ground grizzly. So we will use the largest African lion population, the Namibian lion.
Barren ground grizzlies (Ursus arctos horribilis) average around 420 lbs:

The Namibian lion (Panthera leo melanochaita) averages 197 kg (434 lbs)
So the lion has a very small, 14 lb weight advantage, this would be very close to a weight parity fight.
GRAPPLING ABILITY (PC2-VALUE), THE LOWER THE SCORE THE BETTER:
BROWN BEAR: -7.045 LION: -0.531

LIMB ROBUSTICITY STUDY, ML-DIAMETERS OF ALL FOUR MAJOR LIMB BONES:
BROWN BEAR- 40.97% LION-36.86%

BITE FORCE STUDY, BFQ AT THE CANINE TIPS
BROWN BEAR-99.3 LION-123.8
beargorillarealm.proboards.com/post/78/thread
So here are the advantages:
Barren ground grizzly:
-better grappler -more robust limbs -more stamina -plantigrade -more intelligent -more durable -longer claws
Namibian lion:
-bite force -more head and body length -more shoulder height -mane -faster -more agile
Going by all this, i believe its pretty even, i give this 50%.

I think it is going to be a close fight. The barren ground grizzly will be stronger and a better grappler but the lion would be faster and more agile.

So what would you vote?At close weights the barren ground grizzly gets my vote even though it’s victory will be slight. It still will suffer heavy damage. I guess you voted 50/50, our opinions are not so different.

Just to recap, we have to remember that this is the largest African lion population vs one of the smallest brown bear populations. The lion has a small 14 lb weight advantage. I think its 50% yes. I made this because i think its the more even match up for the lion. We can just imagine the larger brown bear populations/subspecies, all a mismatch.

14lb weight advantage is too small to make a significant difference.

14lb weight advantage is too small to make a significant difference. That's right, its a weight parity fight. But the lion has other advantages listed above, like more head and body length and more shoulder height. That's why i gave it 50%.

Reply #1 are you sure that Yellowstone grizzlies are larger than African lions, aren't they only 190 kg?

ONE OF THE BEST GRIZZLY-LION COMPARISONS IN MY OPINION:

I voted the bear. Though it is a close match but i think that the bear would win 55% because by nature bears are pure fighters. The bear has better stamina than lion and better thick fat coat defense than the lion's mane defense. I beleive that tge bear would win 55%. My opinion.

I am a bit confused. I was seeing lion vs grizzly bear on google books so i saw a book named "Mines, murders and grizzlies by charles F. Outland" which states that a staged fight took place between a african lion and a grizzly bear in San Francisco.
The Parnell vs Ramadan pit fight happened in Mexico staged fight so i think its different. I want to see more about that but could not et access to more information about that fight. We should check that out.

I would soon post that account over here.
I remember than on starfox lion kills bear thread there is an account of a lion killing a siberian bear weighing 800 or 900 kg. Though it looks unclearly yet if i accept it so it the the largest bear killed by lion in accounts as much as i ever seen. Starfox further posts some info about that fight, that that the same bear before getting killed by the lion had an electric shok a week before and was still recovering from those. The shock had a bad effect on the bear's muscles. I will check that out again.

So further down the list, Starfox posted this:
In 1903, Bostock had a valuable Grizzly weighing 900 lbs. His animals are kept in great condition.
So in 1903 Bostock had a 900 lb grizzly, So he is just speculating if "maybe" this 900 lb bear is the same that died 5 years later in 1908, thats all. And yes, the bear had Rheumatism.

Reply 10. That grizzly bear happens to be in its spring condition as it does not have any belly fat.

What is the Rheumatism? That's the first time I hear a thing like that. Rheumatism or rheumatic disorders are conditions causing chronic, often intermittent pain affecting the joints or connective tissue. Rheumatism does not designate any specific disorder, but covers at least 200 different conditions, including arthritis and "non-articular rheumatism", also known as "regional pain syndrome" or "soft tissue rheumatism".[1][2] There is a close overlap between the term soft tissue disorder and rheumatism. Sometimes the term "soft tissue rheumatic disorders" is used to describe these conditions.[3]

And here is the newspaper:
