THE WEIGHT OF THE INDIAN SLOTH BEAR:
Sloth bear, Melursus ursinus Shaw, 1 791 (Mammalia Ursidae), from India: conservation issues and management actions, a case study
Abstract and Figures
One of the 12 mega biodiversity centres of the world, India is unique in having four of the eight bear species (Mammalia Ursidae) that are found in the world. They are brown bear (Ursus arctos Linnaeus, 1758 s.l.), Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus Cuvier, 1823), sun bear (Helarctos malayanus Raffles, 1821) and sloth bear (Melursus ursinus Shaw, 1791). The abundance of sloth bear in India, which is also present in Sry Lanka with the endemic sub-species Sri Lankan sloth bear, M. ursinus inornatus Pucheran, 1855, is determined by its location within the global distribution range, quantum, quality and continuity of habitat available and the anthropogenic pressures the species faces. Bears in India are threatened due to poaching for bear parts, retaliatory killings to reduce conflicts and habitat loss due to degradation and fragmentation. In addition to these concerns, the rehabilitation of communities that eke out a living on dancing bears has made bear conservation a challenge in India. Deforestation and hunting are major threats to bears in India. Unless urgent conservation measures are taken and degraded forest areas are restored, we suspect that sloth bear may soon become endangered in India.
Adult males weight 80-140 Kg and females weight 55-95 Kg (Prater, 1980; Garshelis et al., 1999b).
The median for males would be 110 kg (242 lbs). For females 75 kg (165 lbs).

Sloth bears are known for their pugnacity and aggressiveness They can do some serious damage with their long claws. They sometimes bite with their semi-toothed muzzle and hold on like a pit bull. Females are generally accommodating to other females. Fights sometimes break out between males.
Sloth bears have been observed fighting with tigers and holding their own. One ranger told Smithsonian magazine he observed a sloth bear slap a tiger in the face and push it away. The tiger fled after that. The same ranger said he once saw a sloth bear take on three large tigers, each of which fled in a different direction after the encounter. However, tigers do kill sloth bears more often than visa versa. In most cases a tiger can kill a sloth bear of it wants to but is fearful if suffering severe wounds in the process.

12 YEAR OLD MALE BENGAL TIGER FOUND DEAD, “POSSIBLY” KILLED BY A HUGE SLOTH BEAR.
Dudhwa tiger may have been killed by huge sloth bear:
BAREILLY: A tiger found dead in a water hole in Dudhwa range of Dudhwa National Park on Sunday may have been killed by a sloth bear, suspect Dudhwa officials. While no pugmarks of another tiger were found around the water hole, images of a huge sloth bear have been captured by camera traps set 150 metres from the spot. The bear had a few scratches on its face and seemed to be moving about with difficulty. “The nature of injuries on the neck and head of the tiger suggest they may have been caused during an attack by a sloth bear,” said DTR field director Ramesh Pandey. The autopsy report submitted on Monday had said the tiger was killed by a “large carnivore” but did not specifically say it was another tiger.
Though a tiger being attacked by a bear is rare, Panday recalled an incident reported from Tadoba National Park in Maharashtra in 2018 when a male tiger, ‘Matkasur’, had picked up a fight with a sloth bear near a water hole. The fight was captured on camera by a tourist. “The video showed the tiger was resting in the water when the sloth bear arrived with its cub. It fought with the bear possibly trying to defend its territory. But Matkasur lost the fight as it struggled to grip the bear’s thick fur. Fortunately, the tiger survived,” the field director said.
Pandey suspects that in Dudhwa, too, a similar situation arose. But in this case, the tiger was aged as it was over 12 years old. Such tigers are often thrown out of their territory and sometimes reside around water holes due to easy availability of prey. “This tiger may have fought with the sloth bear for dominance over the water hole as in Tadoba. However, this is not the final conclusion. We have also sought pictures captured by camera traps in Dudhwa range during tiger census of 2018. This will help us in identifying if any other tiger is in this area. “A bear is quite a powerful animal and its claws may cause deep wounds on the tiger's body,” Pandey said. Daksh Gangwar of Wildlife Trust of India, who was part of the veterinary team that conducted the autopsy, said, “The injuries were caused by a large powerful animal, possibly a carnivore. Such injuries can also be caused by a sloth bear because it has strong claws and can inflict serious injuries on a tiger."

By Thomas Sharp: Sloth Bear Attack Behavior and a Behavioral Approach to Safety: Sloth bears (Melursus ursinus) are known to behave aggressively toward humans, and are believed to be one of the most dangerous wild animals in India. Although several papers have documented sloth bear attacks, no attention has been given on how to behave in sloth bear country to avoid encounters, or how to react to a sloth bear attack to minimize injuries and the likelihood of death. Wildlife SOS field research teams interviewed a total of 342 people, including 180 that had either been attacked or that had witnessed an attack, and 162 people that have had encounters with wild sloth bears that did not result in an attack. Our research and investigation confirmed that all attacks were defensive-aggressive in nature; we found no evidence for predatorial motivations. Our findings also show that people who had been making noise while moving through sloth bear country were less likely to be attacked. Our data also reveal that 9% of individuals who fought back during an attack were killed, and 11% of people who attempted to run were killed, whereas there were no deaths among people who merely fell to the ground and did not fight back. However, the data also reveal that those who fell to the ground and did not fight back were more likely to sustain serious injuries than those who did fight back. www.researchgate.net/publication/315848286_Sloth_Bear_Attack_Behavior_and_a_Behavioral_Approach_to_Safety
