Oh look at that the president agrees! THEODORE ROOSEVELT wanted to make the grizzly the national symbol of America. He hated it when the bald eagle was voted in. President Roosevelt stated that the bald eagle is ( in his words ), an over-rated vulture. More than any other wild animal on earth, Teddy Roosevelt admired the grizzly.

In reality, I believe that the sloth bear does have a certain amount of fear of the tiger. But, after a million years, and probably even more than that, the sloth bear has learned that his chances of surviving a close encounter with a tiger is to 'stand your ground'. He cannot scurry up a tree as fast as the arboreal sun bear or the Asiatic black bear. He cannot outrun a tiger. But, he is a very courageous bear. It takes a special kind of courage to stand up to a bigger stronger beast. -( IMO ). Most often, the tiger will back down and walk away. He is an ambush predator at heart.

The sloth bear seems to have warranted aggression.

/\ hahahaha, that's very nice. Tiger fantards can't use the “the tiger was a juvenile” excuse, the tiger was 4 yrs old and a 4 yrs old tiger is already a full adult sized individual.

That's true, no excuses this time. And knowing that this is an adult male makes me believe that in some of the other videos of bengal tigers running away that we have, that some of those could also have been males.
They should change his I.D tag from "T-57" to "C-57".......C for Coward, lmao

There are more than atleast 11 videos of sloth bears chasing away tigers in face to face. It clearly explain the bear nature (frontal) and tiger nature (ambusher). And i too think that many are males as many seems to be quite large. Sloth bears always disrespect tigers in videos. 🙂🙂🙂🙂

That's from 5 years ago though, we probably have that interaction posted somewhere in this thread. But yeah, that is not surprising, its normal, happens alot, even a 4 year old male ran away a few days ago (reply #67).

Here's a list of male adult tigers getting owned by fluffy bears.
1) Matkasur, a 7 yrs old male tiger, tries to kill mother bear and fails. 2) Mother bear owns Ustaad and his wife. 3) Khali, a male dominant tiger, gets owned by sloth bear. 4) T-57, 4 yrs old male tiger, gets owned by sloth bear.
Tiger fanatics will always try to defend their striped kitties saying "they were unhungry and unserious" even though they attacked first. Nothing is more laughable than their stupidity.

It is worth to be noted that sloth bears are not mentioned as a species dominated by the tiger like dholes or leopards. Here are some interesting quotes from this page. (Page 106)
"The dholes packs have been seen to harass chase off leopards from their kills."
"Leopards unlike in Africa or india, do not hide their prey in trees of Sri Lanka due to the absence of tigers and leopards."
"Leopards avoid areas where tigers are common."
But the sloth bear does not avoid tigers as they do not fear them. It is clear that since leopards fear tiger so they change their lifestyle and places. Sloth bears despite of being smaller than tigers, live normally with the tiger and do not change their lifestyle or area acvording to the tiger's presence meaning tigers respect sloth bears.

Here is a summary of Sloth bear and tiger intereaction in points:-
1#. Tigers, generally, do not hunt sloth bears. (Richard lydekker, Panna and Chitral NP tiger's diet chart, Tej Kumar)
2#. Tigers mostly avoid face-to-face confrontations with Sloth bears. (Altre edizioni, Francis leukel)
3#. Sloth bears do not fear tigers abd tigers do not change their behaviour. Both do not have predator-prey relations. Tigers do not dominate and these bears roam without any tension. (Thapar, Garshiells, Yoganand)
4#. Tigers always kill by ambush and in face on fights, tigers normally flee rather than fighing the aggressive bears as bears can injury them seriously. (Adele conover, Joshi, accounts)
5#. There are many cases of Sloth bears defeating tigers in face-to-face, head-on fight, including sometimes multiple tigers and adult males like Genghis, Khali and Matkasur. (Accounts from experts and many videis from Youtube)
6#. There is one unconfirmed case of mature male tiger killed by Sloth bear. (Bareilly)
7#. Sloth bears very rarely have been known to drive away tigers from their kills. (Valmik Thapar)
8#. In fights, between sloth bears and tigers, the match is often draw. (Yoganand)
9#. In most sloth bear vs tiger fights, the large-hearted fighter bear has the upper hand. (Singinawa Jungle Lodge Reservation)
