en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_black_bear The largest Asian black bear on record allegedly weighed 200 kg (440 lb). Zoo-kept specimens can weigh up to 225 kg (496 lb). So, the heaviest wild moon bear on record weighed 200 kg. or 440 pounds. Adult male moon bears of this size are not typical. When we read that tigers stalk, ambush, and kill even the biggest male Asiatic black bears, those "huge" bears are roughly 100-pounds less in weight than the tiger.

I have been busy researching; digging for information. No serious biologist gives the moon bear a normal weight of 440-pounds. In fact, the best I can find is, "alleged weight of 440-pounds" meaning unconfirmed. Was this bear shot and weighed by a hunter? weighed by a biologist or a park ranger? I have found nothing. Biologists give figures like these: animaldiversity.org/accounts/Ursus_thibetanus/ SIZE Range mass 65 to 150 kg 143.17 to 330.40 lb Average mass 100 kg 220.26 lb Range length 120 to 180 cm 47.24 to 70.87 in

The book I quoted is almost 20 years before that account. This is new I’m pretty sure. The displacing event - 1997 (first hand source). This event is 1978.

So it wasn’t from 1997. Here’s why:
“The late Colonel Jim Corbett has described how a large Himalayan black bear , attracted to the spot by the smell , came down a hill to attack a tiger on a kill , and , after a terrific battle , succeeded in driving the tiger away”.
This came from 1963. Earliest I could find, even tho it’s not first hand. But I should note the account I found also isn’t the first hand source.
Though this definitely isn’t a misquote. This account doesn’t mention a carcass. It even says “Corbett mentions” which would mean this came from his one of his own books. Corbett witnessed more than one fight of bears and tigers fighting.

Trust me, i would love for it to be a never before seen account of a black bear killing a tiger, it would be the first, but it really sounds like its the same event. Corbett lived from 1875 to 1955, so both books are just referring to events that happened in that time period. And "Corbett mentions" could just mean what is said in his original book, doesn't mean someone heard him say it.

A Himalayan bear is still around the same size of a tigress. So a bear is stronger than a tiger at parity.
