This is from Captain Benjamin Burbridge, American hunter and explorer.
"The gorilla is the most interesting of the jungle inhabitants"
"The gorilla pits its strength in its huge arms and body against the vicious teeth and claws of the lion and leopard and most often than not triumphs over his jungle foes."
"He kills to protect his young, though while his adversaries kill him for food, the explorer said that when the two meet, the battle is described by Captain Burbridge as short and decisive, the gorilla either tearing the lion or leopard limb from limb with his terrible strength or his adversary sinking his teeth onto the gorilla's jugular vein."

ACCORDING TO OLD HUNTERS, THE GORILLA IS THE REAL KING OF THE BEASTS.

Account told by Attilio Gatti, Italian-born explorer, author, and documentary filmmaker who traveled extensively in Africa in the first half of the 20th century:
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attilio_Gatti
One of the pygmies imitated the cry of a leopard, which always infuriates the gorillas. The youngster and the females immediately raced to the branches of a tree, while the huge male, which the natives called "king of the gorillas", howled with fury. When the leopard cry was repeated, the big fellow, wild with hate, snapped the trunk of a tree in two with a crackling sound like a cannon shot. Brandishing this formidable weapon, he advanced a few steps, emitting a howl of a very different character. It must have been an order, for the females and the young ones promptly dropped down from the trees and trotted away towards the bushes. As soon as they had disappeared the gorilla, in a last burst of rage, siezed the trunk of a tree with his fingers, tore it to pieces as though it were a stalk of soft sugar-cane, and threw it far away. Then, dropping down on all fours, he walked slowly and majestically away, as though to say "here i am, you can do nothing to harm my family"

"The gorilla is a very powerful creature, in fact, a full-sized father gorilla would be more than a match for 10 men in physical strength"
"A man hunting in the jungle would rather face a lion or a rhinoceros than an angry gorilla"
"This creature can seize a leopard, maul it to death, and toss it aside just as if it were a kitten"
"The father gorilla makes a bed of branches at a foot of a tree. From this it is always ready to drive off leopards or other enemies when they try to attack the babies who live "upstairs"

Btw, I think I remember an article of a lion vs gorilla fight where both died, but haven't saved it. Eastern African lions crossed paths with gorillas before they were over hunted. However, quite logically, I would say a gorilla can whip a lion.

APPARENTLY, BACK IN THE 19TH CENTURY, IN CENTRAL AFRICA, GORILLAS AND LIONS COEXISTED. NOW LIONS IN CENTRAL AFRICA ARE RESTRICTED TO FRAGMENTED AND ISOLATED POPULATIONS, SO THEY DONT COEXIST ANYMORE. HERE IS THE FIRST DOCUMENTED ACCOUNT OF A FIGHT BETWEEN A LION AND A GORILLA, THEY KILLED EACH OTHER.

So you think a gorilla can whip a lion? Wow, not many people think that, if you go to any other forum and you say that, they would literally kill you, most posters think a gorilla is just a helpless ape that gets killed by leopards. They are dead wrong. If you read this thread from the start, you will see what the old hunters/naturalists/researchers thought, that the gorilla is the real king of the beasts, and that leopards stand no chance. Hell, they even think a lion is no match (i think they went a little too far there) but that's what they thought. I think gorilla vs lion is debatible, but any feline below that is not, a lioness, a jaguar, a leopard, they would all get wrecked by the historic animal.

Going further. Indeed, gorillas are no helpless against leopards. They definitely would be able to kill one or two leopards. Most of the records I saw were all ambushes.

A silverback gorilla is not a troop leader for nothing.
