So the Eastern lowland gorilla averages 386 lbs, the Pantanal jaguar averages 237 lbs, that is an 149 lb weight advantage for the gorilla, the gorilla is 63% heavier than the jaguar.
So now lets take a look at the other advantages/disadvantages:
GORILLA:
#1) weight advantage
#2) long arm span to keep the jaguar at a distance: 8 feet average (2.4 meters)

So taking all these advantages/disadvantages into consideration, in a fair, face to face fight, the historic animal, the Eastern lowland Silverback gorilla will prevail 7/8 out of 10 times, and you can bet your life on that.

The person that wrote this book should honestly eat his own shit. I wholeheartedly agree with this. The Jaguar is not a coward because he ambushes his prey from behind that is pure instinct. He does this to give himself the best possible chance at a kill end of story. It's bred into just about any Cat domestic or wild. AGAIN... PURE INSTINCT not cowardliness. You're giving human terminology to animals, which don't apply at all. please refrain. As far as weight advantage that really depends. Male Lions have been know to take down Buffalo 2 or more times their own weight. A tough kill for sure but it's been done. I've seen a video of a single Tiger make a kill on a Guar. None of these I may state were face to face confrontations, that is not how Big Cats usually operate. Again, it's the ambush that plays to the Big Cats advantage, it has absolutely nothing to do with Cowardliness. |

No I'm not defending Jaguars or any other felines, just stating the facts. I enjoy all animals I just have a particular interest in large cats and Tigers in particular. Don't worry I like Bears to. A wild animal doesn't simply stand still to be killed and eaten. the cats learned to be ambush predators about 20-million years ago. It's all about catching the prey; not a fear of fighting it. So yes, evolution brings about instinct. The big cat's killing methods have been refined by their method's used after an ambush capture. For a Biologists to use Coward when referencing Jaguars seems hard to believe in fact I don't believe regardless what you state. Sorry IMO any self respecting Biologist, zoologists or naturalists would not use those terms in a public statement. If I knew the name of the Biologists and how to contact him or her, I would write them and ask them if those were in fact their words and ask him why they said that. |

I would wager not only on the Eastern lowland gorilla, but any silverback gorilla against a jaguar. Among the living cats, only a male lion or a male tiger could defeat a bull gorilla more often than 50% (imo).  |

I definitely agree. Even the smallest gorilla subspecies would defeat a Pantanal jaguar more often than not.
I agree here also. That being said, i would argue that a lion/tiger would not defeat a Silverback as easy as some think.

The jaguar has a bite force of 1555.98 lbf (Wikipedia), the gorilla has a bite force of 914.30 lbf (C.M. ENG ET AL.), but this will certainly not be enough to overcome the true wrath of a mighty silverback. He is just too strong and large for the felid to subdue and kill. The gorilla will murder the jaguar quickly and go back to eating shoots and seeds with the rest of his now safe troop as per usual, with only a few dainty claw marks remaining on his skin to show other predators that he is not to be messed with. |
