"The Andean bear has also been an emblematic animal, involved in the development of many of the indigenous and peasant cultures in the Andean countries. For many he is sacred, for others he is the elder brother of the human being. In the oral traditions of people, the bear is found in legends, tales, songs and myths (Lameda and Del Moral, 2008). The Andean bear appears in the common names of some plants, ’the bear’s hand’ (Oreopanax bogotensis) and ’bear grass’ (Xerophyllum tenax)."

"It is also very common to find 22 LAGRANJA: Revista de Ciencias de la Vida 30.Biological and ecological aspects of the spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus, Ursidae) in the Ecuadorean Andean zone and conservation perspectives under the Landscape Species approach places named after the Andean bear: Alto del Oso (Colombia), La cueva del Oso (Ecuador), Quebrada El Oso (Colombia, Peru, Venezuela), Vereda del Oso (Colombia), among others."

/\ Even Central Americans seem to value this animal. Yes they do. Spectacled bears are revered highly throughout their range. But the interesting thing to note that is these bears are sometimes a creature out if their range too. For example, there are no spectacled bear in brazil, but the matsiguenga people revered spectacled bears as creator gods over there despite of no native bear habitat over there. Spectacled bears, polar bears, brown bears, american black bears and pandas are highly revered animals in their native cultures respectively.

"One of the most emblematic totem spirits from South America: the spectacled bear. This beautiful animal is an endemic species that inhabits the South American continent, especially in the Andes area. It can be seen from high in the mountains to the grasslands and low forests."
"Commonly known as Ucumar , the spectacled bear is the protagonist of various myths and legends on this side of the continent, where it is seen as a powerful beast that awakens admiration and fear and is used as invocation as a symbol of protection."
"In certain regions of Colombia and Peru the spectacled bear is seen as a protective animal. Through his magical powers he shelters the forest, he is the gardener of nature and often maintains the animal ecosystem in the places they live in. It is revered because of its strength, adaptability, and because of the belief that anyone who crosses paths with it will have a productive harvest in their fields."
"Unfortunately, poaching has decreased the population of these bears since their parts are used as protection amulets. Formerly this was not a problem, on the contrary, it could be a balanced way to regulate the over-population of the Spectacled Bear. But today, it is one of the many animals on the endangered list, so this our way of paying it tribute to raise awareness about the need to conserve it."
"In other areas such as Argentina, Chile and certain regions of Peru, the bear is associated with negative symbolism. It is seen as an anthropomorphic being, known to kidnap women and destroys crops. In these cases, hunting them represents security, and although the Andean people preform rituals to invoke the bear, all are in order to keep it away from settlements and crops."
"For witches, this animal becomes an archetype of working with our own shadow. We can review how powerful and divine that inhabits ourselves, the gift we have to create as well as to destroy our environment and, above all, how we can be two beings in one: someone loved and feared. Always during the harvest moons, rituals are performed to invoke the Spectacled Bear, for this reason we share this ritual with you to perform it on the crescent moon and clean aspects of your own shadow."
