Book: Man meets grizzly by Young and Beyers"I have read, too, what has been written by the great hunters, but none of them knew the bear of California. He is the sovereign of beasts; in strength, weight, endurance, and sagacity superior to the lion, and I doubt not has formerly destroyed some great and powerful tribe of lions on this continent."
This is book, is he referring to the california grizzly bear beating the lion in pit fights?? I no longer have those books. In my life, I have done a great deal of moving. I have given huge amounts of books to various libraries. But, I clearly remember this... This was a highly respected outdoorsman in 19th century California, who was well read but had probably never even seen a lion or a tiger. But, that is merely speculation. What he had seen were the huge, powerful, and aggressive California grizzlies. He knew in his heart that no big cat had ever lived that could best such a beast in a fight. ( I agree with him ). He was saying that he believes that in the distant past ( Ice Age ) the grizzly had vanquished "some great and powerful tribe of lions on this continent." ( America ). If not for the giant short-faced bears, the grizzly would have evolved into a huge mostly carnivorous bear, as they did in Europe where the big cave bears were mostly vegetarian.

I just want little confirmation. From this link,
beargorillarealm.proboards.com/post/5396
It says that, "Both do not share the habitat (Grizzly and Lion) but the lion's physical inferiority was proven when both were brought together."
Since its both African lion and American grizzly, this is how i understand it:-
*i think that it is being reffered to Californian pit fights betweenions and bears
The Grizzly Bear of the North America and the African lion of the Africa do not live together and have separate habitats. But when these two animals were pitted against each other in Spanish pit fights of America, so the lion was always beaten by the grizzly. What do you guys think about it?

I only know of that one single pit-fight in Mexico which was originally supposed to take place in California. But, due to the new animal cruelty laws, their plans had to be changed. I sincerely believe in the outcome printed in the Sacramento, California news paper by an eye-witness to the fight which Big Bonns personally saw hanging on the wall of the California State Capital building and is also found in the book; California Grizzly. Other "versions" were published in various newspapers across the country - which is the reason I put little faith in old newspaper stories. But, I do believe that Ramadam the California grizzly killed Parnell the African lion in a matter of a few short seconds. ( Just as Van once killed a 500-pound female coastal brown bear in a mere few seconds ).

Jiren Very nice buddy. I have been to oktoberfest several times, lmao. I've also been to Oktoberfest As for the bear and lion sculpture; straight from the mind of an artist. Remember that the Germanic tribes were the last to accept the lion as the new 'King of Beasts'.

Remember that the Germanic tribes were the last to accept the lion as the new 'King of Beasts'. My Yep. We have evidence of that too. That site said the statue has a dragonfly mark. So, That 20th century has dragonfly mark, which the site I posted assigns that foundry mark to an (unidentified) Japanese maker. (Cited from: www.antiquers.com/threads/foundry-mark-on-a-bronze.67446/)So the maker make statues for fun. This site shows the Same dragonfly mark on a elephant sculpture: www.antiquers.com/threads/foundry-mark-on-a-bronze.67446/To be fair, why would you make a statue based on a singular fight you saw?

The Japanese statue appears to be an African lion and a Himalayan brown bear which, by the way, happens to be probably the smallest and least aggressive of all brown bears. It's as I've often said, a big cat has need of a substantial weight advantage to defeat a bear.

Its the same thing. Different sources of the same event can have different wording. The other one says "presented to him by one of the Barbary powers"
Reply #8:

This one just says "prince of Barbary". It should be the same. Its an anecdote/tale, that's what matters, making it unconfirmed.
