Reply #18: Omg! I never seen that before. But I don't know who won the fight. Because that event happened yesterday, its brand new. It was like a stalemate, noone won. There was no fight anyways, no physical contact, its was just some "growling and hissing".
(Video is inside that link by the way)

Lets analyze that interaction at reply #18, the sloth bear was the one that attacked the leopard, but why? Sloth bears dont hunt leopards, did the leopard had a carcass? Nothing about that was mentioned. So i guess the sloth bear was just trying to scare the leopard from that area, maybe there was a waterhole or something. The sloth bear failed his objective in this case because the leopard stood its ground.

Sometimes spotted hyenas harrass leopards and treat them as a magnet to food. The sloth bear might be doing just that. The leopard might have stood his ground but because there is no carcass nearby, the sloth bear had no reason to stay probably.

"A large Sri Lankan sloth bear eating a young buffalo carcass hunted by a leopard. Sloth bears don't usually hunt for meat. They feed on carcasses hunted by other animals. Sloth bears like to eat "Palu" fruit and also feeds on termites and ants."

YALA NATIONAL PARK: See how the sloth bears' feet are spaced out wide apart. He (or she) is braced for a fight. Retreat is not on the bears' mind.

YALA NATIONAL PARK: See how the sloth bears' feet are spaced out wide apart. He (or she) is braced for a fight. Retreat is not on the bears' mind. The sloth bear knows he can dominate the leopard at carcass disputes. Still in Sri Lanka, the leopard is known as the apex predator. The sloth bear is not a full time predator and therefore does not need the title.

Quote; "After some tense growling and hissing, the bear appears to back down and heads back towards the cover of the forest, leaving the big cat behind." *That is simply one person's interpretation. My thoughts; after seeing that the leopard was not going to push the issue, the bear no longer had a reason to be standing there. The bear did not "run away" but casually walked over to the pond for a drink of water, which was probably his intentions all along.

They meant sloth bear cubs. Biologists say leopards are only after cubs
