We did nice threads about bears interactions with wolverines, cougars and wolves. I do also think that the grizzly bear aka North American brown bear do mirrors the African lion in same ways.
- grizzlies steal kills from wolves and cougars and lions do the same to hyenas and leopards. - hyenas sometimes prey on lions but usually cubs and females but the male adults can scare away an entire clan, that actually applies the same to wolves with grizzlies: wolves prey on females and cubs but male adults dominate whole packs in dispute over kills. - there are plenty of accounts of leopards killing lions but those are all unrealible and in reality they only kill young individuals and are defeated by adults, the same thing also applies to cougars with bears. - wolverines are reputed to kill bears but in truth they only bluff with them and are even killed and eaten, the same thing applies even to honey badgers with lions.

Reply #28, well it actually says "If the tiger is not vanquished in his first fight with the bear, he will be sent alone against the las bull, and if the latter conquers all his enemies, several pieces of fire-works will be placed on his back, which will produce a very entertaining amusement"
But good find Montezuma because the state of Louisiana (where that fight took place) was part of Spain until 1802:

And the account you are talking about of black bears always defeating tigers was in the early 1900s. So yeah, the fight you posted is just one more step to make us believe in the account below as we know these fights happened:

American black bears in Pennslyvania can reach 400 to 500 pounds on average. 600 pounds will be exceptionally large. Will post the info later as I am out of the house at the moment.

Here you can see a chart of North carolina black bears which is the subspecies of Eastern black bear (Ursus americanus americanus), 7 adult male specimens ranged from 202 to 307 kg (445-676 lbs)

Anyways, we dont know if the Californians of the early 1900s used the California black bear or they imported larger bears from other states, we basically have no info.
However, a fight for money and betting would have to be at similar size otherwise no one would bet on the smaller animal.
