WESTERN LOWLAND GORILLA (GORILLA GORILLA GORILLA)-170 KG (374 LBS).
CROSS RIVER GORILLA (GORILLA GORILLA DIEHLI)-NOT MENTIONED. THIS IS THE LEAST STUDIED GORILLA SUBSPECIES AND MOST ENDANGERED. BODY WEIGHT IS NOT KNOWN TO BE MUCH DIFFERENT THAN THE WESTERN LOWLAND GORILLA.

HUMAN-GORILLA SKELETONS:
The gorilla is slightly shorter but much more robust imo.

From your Reply #5, this is the 9 feet tall, 600 lb gorilla killed in Central Africa. The weight was estimated because it said "about" and they gave a round number. But the height is definitely off because there are no 9 feet tall gorillas, most are are under 6 feet tall, with the tallest modern gorilla being 6 feet 5 inches.

That's nice! I didn't have much time to check the figures. I will read them more in depth once I will have the time.

Samson (gorilla)
Samson (1949–1981) was a male silverback western lowland gorilla given to the Washington Park Zoo in Milwaukee Wisconsin by the Pabst Brewing Company. Samson reached a weight of 652 lb (296 kg) and lived alone in a glass enclosure. He often hit the windows in frustration and managed to break the glass four times. He was moved to the Milwaukee County Zoo in 1959, and quickly became the main attraction. Samson was one of the largest gorillas in captivity.

The gorilla in the picture above looks like a muscular fellow.

Remember that this is a Western lowland gorilla, the smallest subspecies (although a few sources claim the cross river variety as being smaller).

No, the mountain gorilla is actually in second place after the Eastern lowland gorilla. I've read this in several locations. Also, from numerous sources, I've been reading that the Western gorillas are the smallest. In fact, read your own opening post in "Western lowland gorilla". Now, remember back to that study on brown bears, when the Alaskan peninsula brown bear was shown as larger than the Kodiak bear? Well, I believe that this is a similar situation. If you start read up on the Western lowland gorilla, you will see it stated time after time as the smallest of the gorillas.

You have probably read general websites which are unreliable. What i linked above are actual studies, actual weighed specimens.

As is the brown bear study on Reply #146 Google "smallest gorilla species" and see what you find. That one single study with weights given from random gorillas is the only source I've seen giving mountain gorillas such a low weight. These people should know; www.gorillatoursafrica.com/types-species-and-subspecies-of-gorillas/ And dozens of other sources.

That's just a random website brobear, random websites are not reliable for weights, you should already know this. Its the same thing as if i show you a random website stating that tigers average 300-350 kg
The average weight of different species of tigers is: Siberian Tigers: 300 to 350 kg Bengal Tigers: 200 kg Sumatran Tigers: 110 to 140 kg

You need to go by reliable books/studies which have biologists/primatologists/scientists as references, just like this one, see the reference (Smith ane Jungers), Jungers is an expert, look at all the studies he made:
scholar.google.com/citations?user=tMavHHQAAAAJ&hl=en
"Most recent estimates suggest that among adult males,.Gorilla gorilla beringei (Mountain gorilla) 162.5 kg are the smallest"

OK, the 2001 study shows that G.g.beringei is the smallest although their females are the largest. Then, go back to 1997, G.G.beringei is larger than G.g.g. Perhaps a letter to: President & CEO/Chief Scientist of the Fossey Fund Dr. Tara Stoinski spent many years leading gorilla research at Zoo Atlanta and continues to partner with the Zoo on science and conservation partnerships. Dr. Stoinski is a leading primatologist and expert in gorilla behavior studies, helping to carry on and expand the legacy of pioneering scientist Dr. Dian Fossey. She holds a Ph.D. in psychology from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a Master’s degree in biology from Oxford University, England. Or perhaps some up to date data. ______________________________ link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-1-4899-0092-0_6 This is also old 20th century data: lowland males: average 169 kg or 372.58 lbs. mountain g. average 159 kg or 350.53 lbs. Body size range of lowland and mountain male g. overlap. Female lowland - 71 kg or 156.53 lbs. F. mountain g - 98 kg or 216.05 lbs.

I can try to email the Dian Fossey gorilla fund about the weights, they have answered me before.
