I will go with the smaller subspecies of American black bear.

I will actually have the same vote. Not all American black bears grow larger than a silverback gorilla.

I agree with everything brobear stated.
On another note, it is my opinion that silverback gorilla vs black bear at weight parity would be a great and very even fight. I would have to analyze each advantages and disadvantages, but just a quick opinion (without analyzing too much) would give me 50%.

I would have to analyze each advantages and disadvantages, but just a quick opinion (without analyzing too much) would give me 50%. The gorilla and the bear have a lot in common. Intelligence, believed by many experts to be fairly equal. Their usual fighting technique, wrestling and biting. In both speed and agility, they are probably just about evenly matched. As for naked brute strength, perhaps they are evenly matched there as well. However, maybe not. The question remains unanswered; "How strong is a bull gorilla?" *IF the bear and the gorilla are equal in both weight and strength... 1- The bear has the advantage of having claws to cut or rip flesh. 2- The gorilla has the advantage of having hands with which he can grip and hold on with; a definite advantage in grappling.

Also, both black bear and gorilla are plantigrade. The gorilla has the reach advantage.
