This topic is originally posted on Carnivora. Which animal would you sacrifice to bring back an extinct one? State why. Having an extinct animal brought back to life for example can quickly breed with the extant animal in the same area.

While I do not like polar bears to die. Bringing back ursus maritimus tyranus would mean they would breed with polar bears and thus polar bears will indirectly be sacrificed . If polar bears come from the Steppe brown bear which have got separated from the rest of their kin by glaciers and if these extinct animals return, we have to be prepared that they may invade the territory of some of the extant animals. For example bringing back Steppe brown bears would cost them to interbreed with the polar bears etc.

Unfortunately bringing back the tyrant polar bear means investing and indirectly sacrificing polar bears. Still it is better to have your genes live on instead of being killed off to extinction. Cave bears have breaded with brown bears making some brown bears have cave bear genes. Brobear or King Kodiak has that info. Therefore, if extinct bears like the tyrant polar bear or steppe brown bear were brought back to life, the polar bear genes will live on in them and they will not really go extinct. Polar bear genes still live on in grolar bears, prizzly bears, and ABC brown bears. Likewise bringing back Pleistocene black bears or even allowing American black bears into glacier bear realm could cause 'extinction' not by killing but by outbreeding the latter with dominant genes.

If I bring back the giant dragonfly, it is going to consider the extant dragonflies and even small birds it’s prey.
