Adult brown bears in this region can weigh over 300 kg (unpubl data), will often appropriate kills from tigers, and have been reported to kill young tigers (Heptner and Sludski 1972, Kucherenko 1985). Such animals are immune from attack by tigers in summer, but tigers will kill brown bears in their dens in winter (Bromley 1965, Kaplanov 1948).

So true. That's why tigers always leave their prey to such bears and never think of hunting them even by ambush. A male cougar will kill a subadult black bear by ambush but gets always dominated by male black bears and simply avoid them; a scenario quite similar to brown bears and tigers as it's the generally basic behaviour among larger ursids and smaller felids.

Nothing apart from a larger bear or man with weapon can fare well against an adult male brown bear in a face encounter.
