shaggygod.proboards.com/FOSSIL RECORD. Although no fossils of H. malayanus are known, the species descended from Ursus minimus, a widespread Late Pliocene bear that was similar in size to H. malayanus (O’Brien 1993).

The Malayan sun bear has very loose skin around the neck so that if bitten on the back of the neck by another bear, a tiger or clouded leopard, the bear can turn in its skin to bite back of its attacker (11).

When compressing the dorsal skin of Manis the sun bear, her loose skin (like a shar-pei dog) folded into several flips and exposed her yellow furs. Now Manis look like a "banded" sun bear!

/\ So it’s thick loose skin seems to be verified. Never heard about a clouded leopard attempting to prey on a sun bear. Maybe attacks do happen on cubs but adults especially males have a decent weight advantage.

Shedding light on the sun bear An expert climber, with strong powerful claws which can rip open tree trunks and a long tongue to reach deep into the nests of stingless bees to relish calorie-dense honey and larvae, is the introduction Dr. Shyamala Ratnayeke gives to the exotic-sounding, very secretive, ‘sun bear’, the smallest of the world’s bears.“Sun bears rarely attack people, which may be related, in part, to their very arboreal nature. Rainforest trees afford safe refuge from most predators, so the evolution of aggressive behaviour may not have been necessary,” she explains, adding that they inhabit the warm and humid rain forests of Southeast Asia. www.sundaytimes.lk/230716/plus/baring-her-bear-fascination-525189.html

It seems that sun bear may be monogamous as well. "Little information about the social life of these bears, but there is some evidence to suggest they may be monogamous." www.balisafarimarinepark.com/the-smallest-bear-in-the-world/"Not much is known about the breeding rituals of these bears, but studies have found that pairings may be monogamous." www.nathab.com/know-before-you-go/asia-the-pacific/borneo/wildlife-guide/sun-bear/#:~:text=Not%20much%20is%20known%20about,until%20they%20are%20full%20grown. "When in breeding condition, however, mating pairs seem quite affectionate with each other, with the two bears hugging, play-fighting, and nuzzling. Little is known about mate selection or habits, especially since there is no set breeding season, but there are some researchers who believe the sun bear is monogamous. Adult pairs, possibly mates, have been observed travelling with litters of cubs, which is extremely unusual for bears. However, this has yet to be confirmed." zsl-edge-of-existence.tumblr.com/post/157354958257/like-most-bears-sun-bears-are-generally-solitary
