California grizzly bear is an extinct subspecies of Brown bear. Their appearance was quite like the bears found in the southern coast of present day Alaska. In California (formerly known as Bear Republic), this subspecies was admired for its size, strength and beauty.
Earlier, all grizzlies found in North America were grouped together as a unique species till recent DNA testing showed that they must be sorted taxonomically in the same species. Thenceforward, the California grizzly was reclassified as a separate species.
Symbols
This subspecies is the most enduring and visible symbol of California, decking both the state seal and the state flag. Grizzly was the symbol of the Bear Republic, the name that California carried when it was an independent country. Later the national flag of the Bear Republic became the state flag of California, which is still popular as ‘Bear State.’ In 1911, a new version of the state flag was adopted by the state legislature. In 1849, the bear seal became a permanent part of the state seal.
Reintroduction
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service received a petition where they were asked to meet their legal obligation under the Endangered Species Act and introduce Grizzly bears to a sufficient and suitable space in the West. California still holds a great habitat for 500 grizzly bears. The petition, however, did not ask for immediate introduction of Grizzly population. It also asked to bring proper groundwork including public education and careful study of its habitat.

I think this bear has a more elongated head that most bears except the barren ground grizzly and polar bear.
The California grizzly has an 85% carnivorous diet, info posted by Brobear on the domain.

I think this bear has a more elongated head that most bears except the barren ground grizzly and polar bear. The California grizzly has an 85% carnivorous diet, info posted by Brobear on the domain. When looking at the big picture; most information on the California grizzly is speculation based primarily on stories told by pioneers of the 19th century. We know that they were big bears. Every book I read, from numerous authors, described the California grizzly as the biggest bear of the continental United States (excluding Alaska). But, just how big we can not know for certain. Since they are extinct, we have no modern records to examine. The best I can say is, they were likely somewhere between the size of an Eurasian brown bear and an Alaskan coastal brown bear. Their diet is also a mystery as we have no biological studies on them. The fact that they were large bears would suggest salmon (are there salmon in coastal California?), or perhaps sea lions as well as young and female elephant seals. There were no bison in California, but there was range cattle, feral hogs, and mustangs. Then again, they were still probably more vegetarian than carnivore; most brown bears are. Nearly everything we "know" about the California grizzly is roughly 90% guesswork mostly based on old stories.

Just one more thing (as Columbo might say) About those outlaw grizzlies, the cattle and sheep killers of the American West.
Notorious Grizzly Bears by W.P. Hubbard - 1960 - Pelage and Character - Weight.
A safe estimate of the average weight of adult grizzlies in our western states would be about eight hundred and fifty pounds. This conclusion results from a careful check on grizzlies killed and weighed by numerous hunters, trappers, and old-time bear men. Nevertheless, there are exceptions. Several outlaw grizzlies investigated were known to have weighed over one thousand pounds.
( These outlaw grizzlies were hunted and killed before the Boone and Crockett Club established the idea of preserving bear skulls ). *When I had first read this several years ago, I considered this to be an exaggeration. But, that was then. W.P. Hubbard was the leading expert on bears at that time. Consider that, after the mega-beast extinction at the end of the Pleistocene, the grizzlies of the N. American Great Plains became foragers and bison hunters. Then, during the 1600s, 1700s, and early 1800s, the grizzly was also hunting range cattle ( the ancestors of the Texas Longhorn ), mustang horses, and wild burros. These grizzlies were feeding like royalty on lots of red meat. Beginning in the mid-1800s, the bison and feral cattle started disappearing, and were replaced by domesticated livestock. This is when the grizzly, following his nature, became, in the eyes of mankind, an outlaw. We all know the "rest of the story." W.P. Hubbard was probably 'right-on-the-money' when he stated that the grizzly of the prairie averaged roughly 850 pounds. In every book I have read concerning the historic grizzly ( those that touched on the subject ) stated that the grizzlies of the open prairie were bigger that those of the Rocky Mountains and rivaled only by those of the West Coast. It stands to reason, that a population of grizzlies with a very high percentage of red meat consumption would be very large bears.

/\ Reminds me of the Californian grizzly bear’s diet which is 85% carnivorous. These bears are certainly the best hunters of bovine during their time.
