Black bears are more predatory than most extant bears except the polar and brown bear (most subspecies).

Bear Meets Deer
This Whitetail buck was struck by a car just as young and hungry black bear happened by.
Mother Nature takes care of the rest.
No, wildlife does not die on a morphine drip with Mozart on the stereo.
And yes, bears do eat meat when they can.
There are now about 500,000 black bear in the U.S.
I'm not sure where these photos come from (New Jersey and Virginia have both been suggested), but black bears are thriving all over, with more than 4,000 black bears in New Jersey and maybe 22,000 in Virginia.
Entrails are generally the first course for any predator. This bear will be full long before it gets to the back strap or rump.

Reply 20. It seems the black bear has been underrated.

Key word here is mauling. This is what a bear does. He is like a thug who simply does as much damage, in as short a time as possible, using both teeth and claws, tearing flesh and breaking bones. When he is done, the bear has no concern at all whether his prey or adversary is breathing or not, just so long as it is disabled. If it was an adversary, the bear will simply walk away. The victim of the mauling, if still breathing, will likely die soon after. If the victim is a prey animal, the bear will eat it alive.

/\ The more I see this picture, the more I am glad I am not being eaten alive. Honestly, I believe bears’ make their prey suffer long.

Spring diet of American black bears ( Ursus americanus ) in a moose ( Alces alces ) – woodland caribou ( Rangifer tarandus caribou ) system in northern Ontario, Canada
Abstract and Figures
American black bears (Ursus americanus Pallas, 1780) are opportunistic foragers, and across most of their range in North America, their diet is predominantly vegetation with limited consumption of vertebrates and invertebrates. However, they are also predators of ungulates, especially neonates, with regional variation in the amount of predation pressure they exert. We used scat analysis to examine the diet of black bears during the calving season in a moose (Alces alces (Linnaeus, 1758)) – woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou (Gmelin, 1788)) system in the Boreal forest of northern Ontario, Canada. Bears consumed herbaceous plants (46.5%), fruits and (or) seeds (20.0%), moose (3.3% adults; 4.3% calves), American beaver (Castor canadensis Kuhl, 1820; 8.5%), and insects (mostly ants; 4.2%). Bears had the highest consumption of moose and beaver in early spring, before switching to a more vegetation-dominated diet. We did not detect evidence of caribou consumption. Based on our results, black bear consumption of moose, particularly neonates, may warrant further investigation.

Black Bear Killing an Elk Calf
We had stopped at Mammoth to have breakfast around 7:30 on Monday May 30th. As we were looking out at the hill behind the ranger housing my friend claimed he had spotted a bear running back and forth. I thought he had seen a elk as it was snowing pretty hard and quite dark out. I was surprises to see a bear. So we finished up and went over to where a crowd had formed by the old vacant store. When we pulled into the parking lot my friend yelled look the bear is dragging something. he had run through the field by the church, grabbed the elk calf and was dragging it behind the buildings. It took a good 15 minutes for the elk calf to die as the bear ate the rump first. Pretty gruesome to watch and listen too. I tried to clean up the images as much as possible but the snow was really coming down and it was very dark.
