reply to op: Description: A large bear, most commonly dark brown in colour but can range from blonde through to black. The often grizzled appearance is caused by the light coloured tips of the long guard hairs over the shoulders and back. The bears have a distinctive hump on the shoulders and a slightly dished profile to the face. The front claws are noticeably long. There is considerable variation in size depending upon the food available. Adult males typically weigh 135 to 390 kg, females 95 to 205 kg. Adults are usually between 90 and 110 cm at the shoulder. These bears are usually larger than those of the interior (due to the larger amounts of protein in their diet). Is this why Sergei Kolchin said this:

THE ALASKA PENINSULA BROWN BEAR AVERAGES 389 KG (857 LBS) FOR THE 9+ YEAR OLD MALES

Now, for the latest scientific weights of Ussuri brown bear, here:

So Kolchin just made a "general statement" without showing any scientific data/chart, he probably meant in general. As shown above, latest scientific weight charts:
Average weights:
Alaska peninsula brown bear- 389 kg Ussuri brown bear- 286.4 kg
I think the bears from Alaska are much larger on average.

/\ I was thinking it meant potentially or in some areas they are able to reach that weight range but you are right, the Alaskan brown bear is much larger. It is just that my team leader recently said that Americans exggegerate the weight of brown bears. Therefore, I need to give him some proof of the weights.

Also, if you compare this thead here, with the Ussuri brown bear thread, you will see many more larger specimens in this thread here (Alaska Peninsula brown bear). Both can reach around 1500 lbs though, maybe Kolchin meant that.
