"American black bears feature prominently in the stories of some of America's indigenous peoples. One tale tells of how the black bear was a creation of the Great Spirit, while the grizzly bear was created by the Evil Spirit. In the mythology of the Haida, Tlingit and Tsimshian people of the Northwest Coast, mankind first learned to respect bears when a girl married the son of a black bear. In Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw mythology, American black and brown bears became enemies when Grizzly Bear Woman killed Black Bear Woman for being lazy. Black Bear Woman's children, in turn, killed Grizzly Bear Woman's children. The Navajo believed that the Big Black Bear was chief among the bears of the four directions surrounding Sun's house and would pray to it in order to be granted its protection during raids."
"Sleeping Bear Dunes in Michigan is named after a Native American legend, where a female bear and her two cubs swam across Lake Michigan in order to escape a fire on the Wisconsin shore. The mother bear reached the shore and waited for her cubs, but they did not make it across. Two islands mark where the cubs drowned, while the dune marks the spot where the mother bear waited."

Cherokee people are native americans of the South east portion of North america (now North and South Carolina, Missisipies, Indiana etc).
They were a very important people and culture in american history since they build pre-columbian urban structure in North America and were known as "Mound-building civilisation" since they were well-known people for their great and enormous mound structures like here,
And as important they were in native american history so as was the black bear an important animal to there culture. Blacks bear the most prominent or in other words, the most revered animal in their culture (no grizzlies were known there). And here we see some of theid veneration in the native cherokee culture.
"For generations, the Cherokee people have seen black bears as spirit gude, elder and an ally. Black bears have provided Cherokees with food, clothing, bedding, bone tools, oil or greasing and jewelry. Black bear skins were worn in ceremonies and were a sign of bravery for warriors and hunters. In fact, black bears were so important to the culture of the Cherokee people that they figured prominently in Cherokee folklore."
